BRENTON LOCKETS
ART DIRECTION
ABOUT - PROFESSIONAL
My film career began over 20 years ago. It started with me sourcing & dressing sets. It wasn't long before I found myself gravitating more towards the camera & the onset process of filmmaking.
I have always appreciated the interconnection of the process. All the departments coming together, like aging a prop or a set, adding a fine layer upon a fine layer, creating this other existence. Much like the magic of filmmaking.
I have always enjoyed the dynamics of the variety of people coming together to realize a concept. Within these team co-creations I pride myself on being able to deliver very hands on solutions.
Like all jobs, I believe that they require a certain kind of person, someone with the correct attributes.
From an art on set perspective I take immense pride in representing an entire team of creative minds & ensuring that their vision is being translated effectively onto camera. My personal commitment is to always offer:
-
An intuitive sense & perception of when to engage, how to approach & when to walk away
-
The ability to listen with accuracy
-
Attentiveness
-
Tuning into voice recognition
-
Attention to detail
-
Immense concentration
-
A calm disposition
-
Highly responsible yet cheerful
-
Adaptable
-
My own unique & creative flair
When I am off set I expand these expertise into my own company called Setsmart. I pioneered Setsmart into South Africa in 2006. We are a one-stop store offering a variety of film consumables, an oasis for the industry.
This entrepreneurial expanse has shaped my film career as my time has to be consciously constructed between set life and shop life. I enjoy what they each bring me & see this balance as a blessing.
Owning Setsmart positions me in such a way that my availability is best suited to long form during our winter months. Unless of course I get offered international work, which from my experience portfolio you'll see I have been both blessed & honored to do.
By looking at the Cast column on my FILM CV, you will notice that my focus is always on the quality of film and or actors/actresses that I dedicate my time to, as opposed to the quantity of films I say yes to.
I am excited about this time in my career and welcome all the opportunities that will best support this natural progression & transition into onset art direction.
